A multiplayer rhythm game you play on phones, in the browser
Four instruments, one song, up to four phones. Co-op when you're a band, competitive when you want a crown.
Most rhythm games are you, a screen and a scoreboard. Our Band Sucks is a band: up to four phones, each with a different part of the same song. The drummer gets the drum part, the guitarist the guitar part, and so on. The song starts on every phone at once, and you hear how it goes.
It's played on the phone's touch screen with your thumbs, in the browser, with nothing to install. Solo mode has everything the Party rooms have, minus the friends.
Four instruments, four mechanics
Each instrument is its own little game, built for a thumb on a phone.
Drums: Drum Kit
Dots drop onto the kit. Hit each drum the moment its dot lands. Crash the cymbals, survive the rolls.
Guitar: String Swipe
Notes slide down three strings. Swipe across the string at the ring, the way the arrow points.
Keys: Piano Lanes
Notes fall down the lanes. Tap them on the line and hold the long ones.
Vocals: Karaoke Ball
A ball hops from note to note. Drag it left and right to land on each one. No actual singing.
Four ways to play
Classic
Any instrument, the whole song, start to finish. Hit the notes, keep the combo going.
Madness
Your instrument keeps switching mid-song. SWITCH! New part, new moves, same song.
Idol (Party only)
Four songs, a new instrument for you in each one. Most points takes the crown.
Memory (Keys only)
Learn the riff while the notes show. Then they vanish. Play it back from memory.
Timing, latency and headphones
Every player's timing is judged on their own phone, against the audio playing on that phone, so a slow connection doesn't cost you notes; the room only needs the network to start the song together and to share scores. Bluetooth headphones add a delay, and the game has an Audio sync setting to cancel it. Wired headphones or the phone's speaker need nothing.
Four difficulties, chosen per player: your friend on Expert and you on Easy can play the same song at the same time. There are ten original songs, from an easy one at 117 BPM to an expert one at 153, all around three minutes.
Questions, answered badly
Is it online multiplayer or local?
Both. The room code works in the same room or across the world; the phones only need a connection.
How many players?
One to four in a room. Solo mode for one.
Do I need a controller or a real instrument?
No. Everything is played with thumbs on the touch screen.
Which phones?
Any modern iPhone, Android phone or tablet, in the browser. Laptops sit this one out.
Is it competitive or co-op?
Classic and Madness are the band playing together, each with their own score and combo. Idol is the competition: most points takes the crown.
