Games that use your phone as a controller
Jackbox and AirConsole use phones as controllers for a big screen. We made the phones the whole game.
Phone-as-controller games solved the hardest part of couch multiplayer: nobody has enough controllers. Jackbox and AirConsole put the game on a big screen and let everyone join with their phone. It works great, as long as you have that big screen and someone to set it up.
Our Band Sucks takes the idea one step further: the phones aren't controllers for a screen, they're the instruments and the screen at once. No TV, no console, no laptop. Each phone plays the song in sync and shows its own part.
Three ways to use phones as controllers
| Our Band Sucks | Jackbox / AirConsole | |
|---|---|---|
| The big screen | None needed | A TV, console or computer hosts |
| The phones | Each is an instrument and a screen | Controllers and private screens |
| Setup | Open a link, share a code | Start the host, share a code |
| Price | Free | Paid packs / a subscription for the full catalog |
| Kind of game | A band rhythm game | Trivia, drawing, word games, arcade |
When each one wins
Got a TV, a group of six and a long evening? Jackbox or AirConsole: their big-screen shows are part of the fun and they seat more people. Got four friends, four phones and no TV, or friends in different places? That's where a phone-only game like ours is easier: nothing to set up, and the room code works from anywhere.
Questions, answered badly
Do I need a TV for Our Band Sucks?
No. Everything happens on the phones.
Can we use a TV anyway?
You can cast a phone's screen, but you don't need to: every player sees their own part on their phone.
How many players?
1 to 4 per room.
Is it free?
Yes. No ads, no account, no download.
